CyberLink PowerDirector 5’s Magic Fix Tool Redefines Video Editing of Home Movies

CyberLink Corp. (5203.TW), a leader in Digital Home solutions, today announced that magic video editing software CyberLink PowerDirector 5 now features Magic Fix, a new editing tool that corrects unsteady videos and unfocussed photos instantly from DV camcorders or digital cameras.

CyberLink PowerDirector 5 includes improved magic tools, new effects, a title designer and support for high-definition video content, in addition to Magic Fix and another new feature Magic Style. These latest features speed up the editing process while adding more fun to the creative movie experience.

“Every video or photo enthusiast knows the experience of unfocussed photos and unsteady videos,” said Alice H. Chang, CEO of CyberLink. “Magic Fix is the editing safety net for unforeseen situations, giving users even more choice of the clips and photos they can use. By providing a quick method of rectifying these mistakes for both videos and photos, Magic Fix satisfies all types of home video enthusiasts.”

Video Stabilization
Magic Fix
adjusts the degree of stability for videos, stabilizing all types of movie files including both interlaced and non-interlaced content (progressive video). Non-interlaced content is usually used when recording video with digital cameras (in .AVI format) while interlaced content is created when recording video with DV camcorders. This is especially advantageous in today's market because some video editing applications only support one type of video format (e.g. .MOV) or only one type of video such as progressive video.

Refocusing Photos
Misjudging distances are usually the root cause of out-of-focus photos. Magic Fix corrects this problem by modeling the blurring effect as a mathematical process by deriving an inverse formula and then applying the inverse operation to fix the blurry photos. In essence, Magic Fix acts like a corrective virtual optical lens for refocusing users’ digital pictures.

Xbox 360: connectivity is king-Microsoft's Xbox 360 could be the best digital home device you can buy, if you can get your hands on one.
Microsoft has been trying to get Windows PCs into the living room for years. Yet despite a Media Center facelift in 2003, the PC hasn't been able to shun its complex IT heritage. Does your DVD player need to have anti-virus protection? No. Does your TV take two minutes to start every time you switch it on? Not unless you bought it in the 1970s.

Admittedly, the PC is constantly improving its friendliness. You could argue that it's the most flexible device you can buy for a digital home. But this flexibility is also its biggest drawback. The fact that you can swap out a 60GB hard drive for a 200GB one and install new software means that there's so much more that can go wrong.

Hide-and-seek TVs Flat-screens go fancy with pop-up furniture and fine-art camouflages
The family television, for so long the focal point of American living rooms, is getting harder and harder to spot these days. See that framed Monet on the wall? That's a flat-screen TV beaming the image. ...

CableCARD on Windows Vista Will Require "Certified" Hardware
According to Thomas Hawk, who attended a private dinner with Microsoft's Jim Allchin (Microsoft Co-President of Platforms, Products and Services Division), in order for a Windows Vista MCE PC to be able to use a CableCARD the entire PC MUST be reviewed and "certified" by CableLabs. Moreover, all hardware incorporated must create a "protective path" via trusted PC components (aka Microsoft approved/certified hardware – similar to Microsoft's "Designed for Media Center Edition" hardware compatibility program [logo]). Translation: You can only buy a CableCARD ready Windows Vista MCE PC from a CableLabs licensed OEM.

iNetVOD Invites Internet-Based Video Content Providers to Utilize Their Platform to Offer Free and Fee-Based Content to TV Viewers
iNetVOD, the Internet-based video-on-demand (VOD) software company is offering it’s iNetVOD Service to Internet-based video content providers to utilize it’s platform to offer free and fee-based content to TV viewers. The iNetVOD Service will connect media player devices such as Windows Media Center Edition enabled computers and TVs and eventually, advanced media player devices such as networked DVD players and game consoles, to communicate directly with Internet-based VOD content providers through the computer or TV. This enables viewers to locate and access Internet-based VOD content from the comfort of their living rooms by simply using their television remotes.

”iNetVOD has developed an open marketplace for delivery of Internet-based VOD content. Utilizing the iNetVOD menu of available content, TV viewers will be able to easily search, locate and order the content of their choice directly from content providers. iNetVOD invites all Internet-based content providers to contact us at our website to find out more information and learn how to expand their distribution. It is very important to iNetVOD that content providers continue to have a direct relationship with their customer base and view iNetVOD as another viable distribution channel,” said Larry Fyock, CEO of iNetVOD.

iNetVOD also has ongoing discussions with many network enabled media player device manufacturers that make networked DVD players, game consoles and other devices. Once completed, these devices will house iNetVOD’s software to enable delivery of the Internet-based content.

About iNetVOD
iNetVOD provides a video-on-demand open marketplace service for bringing together Internet-based VOD content providers with network-enabled consumer electronic and media player devices that are attached to consumers' television sets. This would include devices such as networked DVD players, specialized media player devices, gaming consoles, set-top boxes, personal computers, etc. iNetVOD does not provide its own video-on-demand content nor does it build or manufacture its own media player device. Instead, iNetVOD has created an open standard for connecting these existing media player devices with Internet-based video content. This integration helps consumers locate and access Internet-based VOD content using their television remotes. More information can be found at www.inetvod.com.

The Portability of Paid Video
For all the noise about free video content in 2005, we also entered into a bold new paid video content era. Apple's iTunes made premium TV shows playable on portable devices, Sony's PSP allowed audiences to watch UMD (define) movies on the go, mobile carriers created video networks, and Microsoft's Xbox 360 put a Windows Media Center extender in every living room (that could find or afford one).

2006 is continuing the trend. This week at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Google announced the opening of the Google Video Store, where content producers can upload their video content and name their price (with Google taking a cut, of course). And Yahoo! has announced Yahoo! Go, which will also find its way into the mix.

False alarm over Windows support deadline

Microsoft is making changes to its support Web site in an attempt to clear up confusion over its plans for the consumer editions of Windows XP.

Until Tuesday night, a posting on Microsoft's Web site stated that support for Windows XP Home and Windows XP Media Center Edition would end on Dec. 31, 2006. That would mean no more security fixes or any other support items, such as warranty claims, for users of those operating system products.

But the posting was incorrect, Ines Vargas, a program manager at Microsoft, told CNET News.com. The Redmond, Wash.-based software maker has now updated the online information to reflect that the consumer Windows XP editions, along with XP Professional, will be supported until two years after Vista ships, she said. Vista, the long-delayed next update of Windows, is expected to arrive by the end of the year.
